A well-designed and built backyard deck can offer an extension of the home’s living space, offering a place for dining, lounging, and entertaining. It doesn’t have to be large to do this, though. In fact, a small deck can have the same functionality as a larger one if it is designed and decorated appropriately to its size, Find out how.

In order to maximize the space on a smaller deck, look for ways to add privacy and create separate spaces that can be used for different purposes. For example, you could use a pergola or other partial covering to make a divider and provide protection from the elements. Or you could use the upper part of the structure to mount curtains, bug nets, or shades for increased privacy and decreased sun exposure.

Another way to increase the usability of a small deck is to install multi-use furniture. For example, a waist-high counter could serve as a bar or individual seating area to eliminate the need for multiple chairs on the deck. Or you could install a wall that is partially covered with lattice or trellis work to create an area that serves as an extra seat without blocking out natural light from the rest of the deck.

For a more dramatic effect, consider staining the deck a color that matches the home. It will instantly increase the appearance of the deck and allow it to feel like a part of the house rather than an addition. And, since there are limitless color options available, it is a great opportunity for a deck builder to showcase their talent and creativity.
